Barnsley lies on the River Dearne in South Yorkshire, England just short of twelve miles away from the city of Sheffield. The town of Barnsley is the administrative centre for a number of small towns in the area called the "Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley". Although the settlement's roots can be traced beyond the Domesday Book of 1086, the town is most well known for the industrial industries which developed there during the industrial revolution. This long history means that there is some diversity in the visitor attractions which range from excellent museums and galleries to Wentworth Castle & Gardens.
