Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England

Berwick-upon-Tweed is the most northerly town in England and is found in the county of Northumberland. At one time Berwick-upon-Tweed was one of the most heavily fought over pieces of land in England/Scotland. Prior to the Union of the English and Scottish crowns (1603) the town exchanged hands fourteen times (between the years 1174 - 1482). Sadly Berwick's economy suffered to such a degree that it never really recovered, it had been an important Scottish port in the 13th century as it was situated on the River Tweed. Interestingly the town was never formally annexed to England and there are, from time to time, campaigns for the town to, once again, become Scottish. Queen Elizabeth I of England invested heavily in the fortifications in Berwick and later, between 1717 and 1721, Berwick Barracks was built. If you are staying in, or just visiting, Berwick-upon-Tweed you should take some time out to investige the barracks and the town walls as well as some of the other architectural delights.
