Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland. The city has been the nation's capital since 1437 but strangely it is only the second largest city in Scotland, after Glasgow. Wherever you go in the city you are constantly reminded of Edinburgh's rich history. Places such as the Royal Mile, the Old and New Towns (a joint UNESCO World Heritage Site) and, of course Edinburgh Castle are simply so appealing that, at times, during the peak of the season, it is almost impossible to move for eager tourists taking in the 4,500 listed buildings. Today Edinburgh is the seat of the Scottish Parliament and this vibrant city is home to several extremely well attended festivals including the huge Edinburgh Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, the International Festival, Military Tattoo and the International Book Festival, plus the biggest street party in the world, the Hogmanay street party (ticketed event now). There is simply far too much to see and do in this amazing city to list here!
