Inverness is a city in the Scottish Highlands and widely accepted as the "Capital of the Highlands of Scotland". Situated where the River Ness flows into the Moray Firth Inverness came fifth highest in a survey of 189 British cities with regards to quality of life (conducted by Telegraph.co.uk in 2008). Unusually there are no statutory boundaries to the city and although population figures therefore vary considerably nearly all agree that the city is expanding quickly. With a settlement being on the site from the time of the Picts the city certainly has plenty of intereting history and although Inverness has always been an important settlement it was only granted city status in 2001. Since then the city has flourished and there has been much investment leading to a vibrant city with lots of appeal to tourists and locals alike. With lots of bed and breakfast establishments catering for all tastes and budgets Inverness can be the perfect base for a vacation in the Scottish Highlands.
