The Lace Market, Nottingham, shown above, was, during the time of the Industrial Revolution, the centre of the world's lace making industry. Although the market was not, in the typical sense, a market, it did have a large number of lace salesrooms and warehouses and today the area is a protected heritage area with numerous astounding nineteenth century/Victorian buildings. If ever you wanted to visit a "typically English" street then the Lace Market may well be the answer. Quaint iron railings and gates abound with gorgeous old fashioned gas lamps decorate the front of the buildings and other typically English sights, such as the red post boxes and red phone boxes, add that special little extra something. As well as fine Victorian architecture there are also example of other styles including the beautiful Georgian buildings found on High Pavement.

Today the Lace Market has been revitalised and is home to numerous luxury apartments (which fetch a premium price), studios, galleries and the likes. The immediate, and surrounding, area is a highly popular Nottingham visitor attraction with many tourists flocking there during the summer months.

Places To Look Out For

If you are visiting the Lace Market in Nottingham look out for St. Mary's Church which is found at the heart of the market area. Prior to the area being the centre of the lace making industry it was a residential area and it's roots can be traced back to the original Saxon settlement. St. Mary's is built on a small hill above christian foundations which predate the Norman Conquest of England (making them the oldest christian foundations in the country). The Church of St Mary the Virgin (the third church built on the site) is the largest mediæval building in Nottingham and is mostly fifteenth century. The Grade I listed building is actually mentioned in the Domesday Book and, if you are spending time in Nottingham, you should really put aside some time to visit the church and surrounding area.

The Market Square and the Castle should also be high on your "list of places to visit in Nottingham". Handily found in the heart of the city, Nottingham Cawstle is open to the general public and relies much upon the legend of Robin Hood, with statues and plaques depicting various scenes from the legend. Take your time and explore the castle and look out for the Art Gallery and the excellent "Story of Nottingham" (found on the lower floor). Just a short walk from the castle stood the superb Costume and Textile Museum (51 Castle Gate) which had an excellent reputation but is now sadly closed.
