Oban

Oban is a Victorian resort, in the region of Argyll and Bute on the west coast of Scotland, which,as you can see in the photograph above, enjoys an incredible setting in the Firth of Lorn with the island of Kerrera (seen in the distance) providing Oban's bay with natural shelter and protection. Often called the capital of the West Highlands, Oban is often recognised by the strange granite amphitheatre set high on a hilltop overlooking the town. The town is extremely popular with tourists who flock here to enjoy not only the busy little port but also the great outdoors and the highland landscape. Oban's harbour is the departure point the the Hebrides and is Caledodnian MacBrayne's (the ferry operators) busiest port in Scotland with ferries going to the isles of of Lismore, Colonsay, Coll, Islay, Tiree, Mull, Barra and South Uist. It is therefore understandable that Oban is also known as the 'Gateway to the Isles'.
