Eilean Donan Castle in the Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands is a rural and mountainous region of Scotland steeped in history. Today the region is sparsely populated but this was not always the case. Prior the the 19th century Highland Clearances much larger numbers of people populated the Highlands. For much of the areas long and turbulent history the Highlands were separate from the rest of Scotland and the differences between Highland and lowland Scots was enormous. Following the failed Jacobite risings the government saw fit to almost dismantle Highland society and the Clan system and much damage was done to the culture. Happily enough survives and there is much interest and investment in such things as the Gaelic language (which was banned after the risings). Sometimes it is hard, when driving through the barren areas of land, to imagine large groups of folk herding cattle and horses ready for the long cattle drive southwards but, at one time, large numbers of both cattle and horse were exported from the Highlands. Today tourism plays an increasingly important role in the Highland economy.
